Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have published work on enhancing vanadium electrolyte performance through novel additive chemistries, targeting improvements in energy efficiency and long-term stability.

Electrolyte performance directly affects the round-trip efficiency, capacity retention, and operating temperature range of VRFB systems. Advances in electrolyte engineering are widely seen as one of the highest-leverage levers for reducing the levelized cost of flow battery storage.

Cost Reduction Pathway

Because vanadium electrolyte represents a significant share of total VRFB capital cost, improving electrolyte utilization and reducing degradation directly improve project economics — a key theme of ongoing academic and industrial research.
