Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) has commissioned a 20MW/120MWh vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) system in the Indian state of Gujarat, one of the largest flow battery deployments in South Asia.

The six-hour duration system is designed for renewable energy firming, peak shaving, and grid stability services, and reflects India's broader push to add long-duration storage capacity as solar and wind penetration rises.

Six-Hour Duration Economics

VRFB's ability to provide six-plus hours of duration at stable cost makes it well suited to India's grid requirements, where evening ramps after solar generation create sustained storage demand that lithium-ion systems would struggle to serve economically.
